Youth Employment Specialist for the Youth Employment and Skills Strategies (YESS) Program

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide youth with comprehensive employment support including needs assessment and preparing service plans.
  • Deliver one-on-one and group mentorship and coaching to youth to increase work related knowledge and skills that lead to gainful employment and job retention.
  • Deliver training focusing on job search and job retention skills training and assistance (Resume writing, interview techniques, pre-employment/career planning workshops).
  • Organize support/self help groups to address mental health, self esteem, and other emotional issues.
  • Work with Community Navigators and the school boards in promoting YESS program in high schools through group orientation sessions.
  • Outreach to businesses and organizations to create opportunities for youth, including paid work experience.
  • Outreach and collaborate with community partners for work-integrated learning opportunities, including co-operative education placements, internships, and apprenticeships.
  • Establish and monitor work experience sites that support youth goals and career interests.
  • Create and distribute marketing materials to recruit employers and youth participants.
  • Keep detailed records to document clients and services in OCMS.
  • Assist YESS Program Coordinator in assessing the effectiveness of the training component, as well as satisfaction of the participants and employers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Community Engagement Manager/YESS Coordinator.

What you need to succeed:

Education/Credentials:

  • A Bachelor’s/master’s degree OR a diploma in Social Work, Settlement counseling or a related discipline OR a combination of post secondary education and career development practitioner/career counselling related experience.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 1 year’s work experience in a social service setting, settlement and/or community work sectors and/or experience as a Career Development Practitioner and/or experience as Career Counsellor.
  • Fresh graduates with the required educational credentials are also encouraged to apply. We are committed to providing training and professional development opportunities to passionate and dedicated individuals.

  Skills:

  • Understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Understanding of Anti-Oppression and Anti-Racism Frameworks is considered an Asset.
  • Effective cross-cultural communication skills and aptitude for working effectively and sensitively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Comfort with technology and communication platforms.
  • Understanding and strict adherence to Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
  • Fluency in a second language is considered an asset.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong, ongoing partnerships within communities.
  • Ability to work well individually and collaboratively as part of teams.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to multitask and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Comfort with facilitation, giving presentations and excellent public speaking skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of community services, immigration, settlement sector and the public education system is considered an Asset.

Other Requirements:

  • A valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle and relevant insurance is considered an asset.
  • Successful candidates will be asked to provide a successful Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records check.

Job Location:  Various locations throughout York Region.
